Food and your mood

What you eat—and who you eat with—are important for your physical and mental health. Whether you're looking for a way to lift your spirits on a blue day or searching for long-term strategies to help you feel your best, try these tips.

SKIP THAT HANGRY FEELING—NOT YOUR MEALS

Your body needs fuel to help maintain a positive mood throughout each day. Most people should refuel every three to four hours. If you skip meals, you may wind up irritable, not to mention tired and less productive.

GET YOUR OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

These healthful fats play an important role in stabilizing your mood. You can find them in fatty fish like salmon and tuna, as well as in seaweed, flaxseed and walnuts.

SEEK COMFORT IN HEALTHY FOODS

Many people crave sugary, salty or fatty foods when they're feeling down. But regularly eating these types of foods might increase your risk for depression and anxiety. Research has linked healthier choices (like fruits, vegetables and whole grains) to higher levels of happiness.

AIM FOR ENOUGH IRON

Make sure your diet includes iron-rich foods like meat, beans, leafy greens and dried fruit. If you run low on this mineral, you could feel irritable and tired.

EAT WITH OTHER PEOPLE

Inpatient behavioral health services

Adolescent Recovery & Wellness

Our adolescent residential treatment program provides specialized care for youth ages 12–17 experiencing substance use disorders (SUD), with or without co-occurring mental health conditions.

Treatment is designed for adolescents who require a structured, supportive environment with 24-hour supervision to achieve recovery and develop healthy coping skills. The program serves individuals struggling with a wide range of substances, including alcohol, marijuana, opioids, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, hallucinogens, and synthetic substances such as Delta-8 and Kratom.

Admission is based on clinical necessity and appropriateness for treatment. Patients must meet ASAM Level 3.5 criteria for Clinically Managed High-Intensity Residential Services and be medically and emotionally stable. The program is not designed for acute psychiatric emergencies or medical detoxification services.

Both voluntary and court-involved referrals are considered. Successful admission requires participation and commitment from both the adolescent and their parents or legal guardian.

Outpatient behavioral health services

Unity Health offers outpatient behavioral health services at our Clarity Health and Wellness clinics in Searcy, Cabot and Newport. Our teams at Clarity Health and Wellness provide counseling and psychiatric care for ages 4 and older.

Outpatient behavioral health services

Adolescent care

At Unity Health - Specialty Care in Searcy, our Courage inpatient acute behavioral unit offers therapy to adolescents ages 12 to 17. Courage is an 11-bed unit for adolescents who are having emotional or behavioral health difficulties that require short-term hospitalization.

The young patients at Courage will meet with their psychiatrist and other members of their treatment team daily to review their progress and work on their individual goals. Patients will take part in therapeutic group activities while an on-site certified classroom ensures that they won't fall behind in school during their stay.

Adult care

Our Compass program, located in Searcy, Jacksonville and Newport, provides short-term inpatient care and treatment for adults ages 18 and older. Patients at Compass receive a full range of mental health treatments for emotional and behavioral difficulties. They will meet with their psychiatrist and members of their treatment team daily. Patients will also take part in therapeutic group activities and recreational therapy.

Senior care

Our Clearview program, located in both Searcy and Newport, serves adults age 55 years and older. Our Clearview team provides comprehensive treatment to address the unique behavioral health needs of seniors. Clearview offers help for seniors dealing with loss, depression, anxiety and other behavioral health concerns. Patients may take part in individual counseling sessions, group therapy, family therapy and activity therapy. Our utmost goal is for our patients to move to a more independent lifestyle.
